Overview
The evolution of the Universe on small scales is nonlinear. This can be seen as both a blessing and a curse. While nonlinear scales contain precious cosmological and astrophysical information, their theoretical modeling is highly challenging and uncertain. In this workshop, organized jointly by the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics (BCCP) and the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), we want address the question of how to best extract the additional information in nonlinear phenomena from cosmological observations. Special to this year's meeting we plan to dedicate one or two days to the discussion of the reconstruction of linear initial conditions from nonlinear observations, using Bayesian sampling and non-sampling forward-modeling methods, backward-reconstructions, numerical simulations, and machine learning techniques.
For this purpose, we want to bring together experts for reconstruction, nonlinear modeling, simulations and observations, and facilitate as much as possible interactions and discussions among the participants. The format we choose for this is talks and discussion sessions, complemented by excursions and wine tastings in the evenings.
We have reserved Friday afternoon at Vila Vipolže for EdBertFest.
Where: Hotel San Martin, Smartno, Slovenia
When: July 15-21, 2018
Sadly, next year's (2019) workshop had to be canceled due to conflicts with a number of collaboration meetings. We hope to organize the next workshop in 2020.
The registration is now closed. We are excited to say that despite of the high interest in the workshop, we were able to offer participation to all who registered in time. If you did not receive a confirmation, please contact us.
Note that in order to finalize the registration you still need to contact Hotel San Martin.
Once you have confirmed your participation with the hotel, we recommend to make travel arrangements to arrive on Sunday (July 15) in the afternoon and leave on Saturday (July 21) in the morning. Airports serving the area are located in Venice (Marco Polo), Treviso, Trieste and Ljubljana.
The hotel offers a shuttle service from Venice International Airport at additional cost. The costs will depend on the average occupancy. They will probably lie in the range of 35-50 Euro per Person per one-way trip.
If you want to make use of the shuttle service, please take a minute to fill out this form
to inform us about your arrival/departure times.
For those that arrive at a very different time than the other participants, the shuttle will be more expensive (up to 140 Euro per trip).
In this case we recommend taking the train to Gorizia from where a non-shared shuttle ride is only 30 Euro. You can select this option in the form linked above.
Alternative shuttle service from local airports to Smartno can be booked through GOOPTI, but prices may vary.
Venue
The conference will take place in the medieval village of Smartno in Slovenia, on the green hills of the region of Brda(Collio), right at the border with Italy. This is one of the most important and renowned wine growing areas of the region. The venue is located in the Hotel San Martin, where a large fraction of the participants will also find accommodation. The workshop will be complemented by a non-scientific program with excursions and degustations. Further information can be found on the accomodation page.
